It’s a tired way to start a modern article by referring to the speed with which the world has been revolutionized by the computer but, in this instance, it’s highly appropriate. When the first green shoots emerged in the late 1960′s and early 1970′s, computerization was all about automating in-house processes like the accounting system. The software to replace labor was still a few years ago. But, once it arrived, two things happened. The employers cut their costs and improved their profits by terminating the employment of tens of thousands. Second, by removing many of the people who used to deal with customers, the businesses began a slow decline in the quality of the services they provided. Today, corporations hide behind call centers and e-mail systems, rarely providing real people we can talk through our problems with.

Instead of using the Internet and automated systems as a smokescreen to suggest a reasonable quality of service, the new technology should be used to improve the customer experience. At some point, the quality of this aspect of service will come back into focus as a way of distinguishing between faceless corporations. Take the world of car insurance as an example of what can be done. If your vehicle is involved in an accident, what you want is a smooth system for handling your claim. This involves the minimum fuss in submitting the claim online, the identification of suitable bodyshops for performing the repairs, getting quotes with the least delay, and agreeing which bodyshop will actually do the repairs. All this administration needs to be fast because, if your vehicle is off the road, there are storage charges mounting up and rental charges for a substitute vehicle. Multiply this across all the policyholders and the cost to the insurers is higher than it needs to be. If this loss is controlled, premium rates can be stabilized if not reduced. It’s good for all.

That’s why it’s important to support a new website and mobile app for Android and the iPhone that will improve the current situation. They allow you to upload photographs of the damage using your cell phone or hand-held device with a camera, and circulate those pictures to bodyshops approved by your insurer near to where you live. The repair shops keep the site updated on whether they have spare capacity and offer an estimate of the cost of repairs within 24 hours. Because the site works with insurers to limit the list of repairshops to those preapproved by the insurers, there’s a minimum of delay in processing the claim and costs are kept to a minimum. At present, this is still at a beta stage with five insurance companies in a limited number of states. But, assuming the trial is a success, we could see this rolled out across the country. If it genuinely does reduce administrative delays and associated costs, we will see stable car insurance rates. It may not be the cheap car insurance we all want to see, but it’s a good step in the right direction. It should also act as a wake-up call to the other slumbering giants on both sides of the fence. There are creative software people and insurance companies who would benefit the customer by getting together.

If you listen to the commentators, they all sing the same song. We’ve now entered the internet age. This is supposed to convince us something new and wonderful has happened. It’s such a complete break with the past it heralds the beginning of a new information age in which, somehow, we can all get ahead and do things never possible before. This is, of course, pure rubbish. The only difference between the digital age and the hard-copy age that went before it is the ease of access. Having a PC or some other online device gives you access to a vast library with a search engine to help you find the pages you need more easily. But, when you have the right page on the screen in front of you, it’s the same words you could have found in a book or some other written material. All that’s changed is the way the words are presented to you.

So, if you go back in time, printed words have always been used to manipulate people. They sell ideas to you. This means real power lies in the power to control access the means of publication. If a group can control what gets printed and distributed, the words can always tell the same story. But if the means of publication is open to other voices, this can give a completely different view of the world. This is why reputations can be made or unmade depending on who has the power to publish.

The problem for modern companies is anyone today can start up a blog or website. Many internet services are free to use. Similarly, the networking sites like Facebook allow people to write their opinions and describe their experiences. In the past, we would never get to hear Anne from Denver bought a steam cleaner that sprayed boiling water over her hands. Now she can write it and thousands of people can tweet it. It makes it very difficult for manufacturers and service providers to protect their reputations. This explains, in part, why insurance companies very rarely allow interaction on their sites. Since they cannot control what sometimes angry customers may say, they try to deny them a voice. Except there are now some very high profile sites on which people can complain about bad products and services. This movement is not yet sufficient to damage the vast insurance industry, but individual companies are finding it more difficult to prevent their reputations from slowly washing away.

This makes the recent announcement of a new online forum all the more encouraging. The intention is to allow people from both sides of the insurance relationship a chance to ask questions and have their say. Instead of a blank screen on which insurers give you the news they think you should hear, you can now ask about how to get more affordable car insurance rates, what to do if a claims adjuster low-balls the fair market value offer, and so on. This does not mean everyone on the forum will be an “innocent” consumer. There will inevitably be anonymous industry experts giving balancing views and opinions. But this is a hopeful sign of change. You may even get cheap car insurance quotes because of pressure through forums like this.

When it comes to insuring ones health there’s no denying the fact that this form of insurance is a must for everyone even though it’s not legally required and is purely optional. It’s hard to imagine the current healthcare system without insurance because otherwise people couldn’t afford most medical services and doctors wouldn’t get their high salaries, which are among the highest all over the world. Thanks to insurance both customers and service providers are pleased, and everyone’s getting the thing they want. Among many types of insurance available managed care plans are the most widespread, so let’s take a closer look at some of the most common forms of insurance offered by insurers:

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)

This is the most common form of managed care plans as it provides the lowest price and a wide range of services included. It’s main drawback is the lack of flexibility in what concerns the places you get care from. Under HMOs you are limited to a network of facilities and specialists you may get care from and covered to the full extent. If you choose to get your services from someone outside the network your costs won’t be covered at all. Moreover, you are required to choose a primary care physician who will refer you to all the required specialists, so there’s more paperwork involved with this type of plans. Yet, you usually pay lower premiums for that so it’s really worth the effort.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)

Preferred Provider Organizations offer more flexibility but for a higher price if compared to HMO plans. You are still limited to a network of providers to get care from, however if you choose to go out of network there will still be some part of your bill covered only to a lesser extent compared to in-network services. And you aren’t obliged to choose a primary care physician so there’s not so many office visits to do under this type of managed care plans. If you have the additional money and want more flexibility with your health insurance this plan type will definitely appeal to you.

Point Of Service (POS)

Point Of Service plans are often referred to as a mix of HMO and PPO plans as they provide the benefits of both these forms of health insurance. You gain the flexibility of PPO in what concerns the places you get services at, yet you still have to choose a primary care physician and have a network of providers to work with. One of the greatest benefits is that you may choose your family doctor as a primary care physician even if he or she doesn’t make part of the insurer specified network, which is definitely appealing to those who have long term relations with their family doctors. PPO plans may vary in price so it’s really recommended to shop around if you want to get the best rate possible.

As you see, managed care plans come in different forms with the sole purpose of giving you exactly what you need. So it’s really important to assess your individual health insurance needs before choosing the plan type to address them adequately.

The school year is here again for college students across the United States. You know what that means? Spending. Yes, you’ll be paying a lot of money: books, tuition, housing, alcohol, and insurance. At least one of those things doesn’t have to be so expensive.

Learn how students can reduce the price of car insurance below.

STUDENTS FACING VARYING HIGH COSTS

College students will see some of the highest rates for insurance that exist. They are not as high as what high schoolers are charged on average, but they are pretty close. The reasons for these rates are down to the unique risks of college life and college towns:

high numbers of inexperienced drivers

many high-stress drivers

busy schedules mean rushing

congested parking situations

increased risk of encountering drunk drivers

more likely to be driving late at night

higher theft rates

Of course, not all situations are the same. In reality, rates are more highly dependent on the actual collision statistics coming out of the college town than the fact that it is a student on the policy. Certain factors may alter the anticipated costs of insurance.

For instance, if a student’s school is in an urban environment, it is going to be more expensive than were the school to be in a rural or suburban environment. If the school is an a bad part of town with higher theft rates, you should anticipate paying more for insurance than if the town were safer.

Commuting to school rather than living there only partly removes you from this risk. You will still be driving in the same city, but you also have added risks of driving the roads in between. This may also make you more likely to be involved in collisions due to fatigue, stress, and hurrying on the highways or the city streets.

STRATEGIES FOR REDUCING COSTS

Most students can reduce their cost of auto insurance by simply staying on or joining a parental policy. Most companies will allow this until students are in their mid twenties. Combining policies disperses the risk and counters the increase in rates from the student with a group policy discount.

Good students will also benefit from good grades. Not all companies offer this discount, so search hard with auto insurance quotes for a company that does value this trait in customers. The logic behind the good grades discount is that responsible students prove to be responsible drivers.

Alternatively, students could simply not drive. For commuters, this is not really possible, but you could also look into carpooling. Even driving a lower number of miles annually could save hundreds of dollars.

No matter what you choose to do, use auto insurance quotes to do your shopping. There’s no better way to save time or money. Get started with this site by seeing our insurance provider list and getting instant quotes online. Make sure the quotes are for the coverage levels suitable to your needs. Be very careful to use only the most accurate, precise information – otherwise your quotes won’t be accurate. Factor in discounts and claims records, to be sure you have a good long-term partner, then compare the pros and cons to choose a provider.

Extra safety features are often very inexpensive upfront and mean long-term savings on insurance premiums.
Before getting these features, talk to your insurer to make sure you will get a discount.
We have provided a price efficiency rating to let you know the ratio of upfront cost to insurance savings. The higher the price efficiency rating, the sooner you will make up the cost with insurance savings.

Add On Headrest

Protects against whiplash, head, neck, and back injuries. This is essentially a foam pad that attaches to the front of your headrest. It will allow you to rest your head while driving, rather than having to keep in hovering 6-inches from the rest.

Right now, your options are either to hold your head hovering without rest or to sit completely erect at a 90-degree, L-shape.
The add on headrest is an elegant solution to that problem that will really save your neck in a crash. Independent studies have proved it!
Plus, driving is just more comfortable.

Price Efficiency Rating: 7 – Will become higher as more insurance companies do their own studies on its effectiveness in reducing injury.

Signal Mirrors

These side mirrors flash LED turn signals so that it is clearer to other drivers that you are turning. There will be fewer collisions this way. Plus, the LEDs are very energy efficient, long-lasting, and cute!

Price Efficiency Rating: 5 – Installation can be pretty costly.

Child Car-seats

Getting the right child safety devices in your vehicle can save you big insurance money. If you ask your agent to recommend a car-seat, they may actually be able to offer you a discount because they know your child will have a much smaller chance of injury and death.
If your child’s improved safety isn’t a big enough reward, the savings will be!

Rear-facing seats are best, but never put them in front of an active frontal airbag

Do not incline seats more than 45 degrees

Connect all the straps and harnesses correctly

Pay attention to the expiration date on the car-seat

Price Efficiency Rating: 5-9 – Getting the best seat money can buy is better protection for your child and saves you more in the long run.

Sensors and Cameras

While these futuristic features are commonly thought of as expensive add-ons for luxury vehicles, they are becoming quite inexpensive as people and insurers realize they have huge safety and savings bonuses. As more statistics become available, insurers are seeing the proof that these features really do prevent many crashes and collisions, which means bigger discounts and lower rates as you get into fewer incidents.

Lane-departure warning

Front-collision warning

Blind-spot detection

Electronic stability control

Price Efficiency Rating: 5 – Once costs come down, this efficiency rating may well soar to a 10! For now though, it may take a year to recoup costs. However, if it saves you from a collision, which it very well might, you’ve instantly got your money’s worth.

Car Insurance Quotes

If your current insurance provider doesn’t give you significant discounts for extra safety options, consider switching. Car insurance quotes will help you find a more affordable provider. You can even compare policy details and rates from the best insurance companies in minutes using online car insurance quotes.

Whenever you ask a talking head paid by the insurance industry, “How do you calculate the premium rate?” the answer is always the same. There’s a big smile of sincerity and that reassuring voice says, “We look at the driver. It’s all about who you are and what you drive.” And that, of course, is how it should be. Actuaries are paid to estimate the risk of accidents and, as they keep telling us, the statistics never lie. These actuaries are like pack rats. They collect every last detail of every accident that gets reported. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a police report, a claim to the insurers from a hospital for treating accident victims, or reports in local newspapers. They have information about accidents going back to the time we were switching over from real horses to horse-powered engines. So ask how many men aged 33 have had an accident at 2 a.m. while driving a red Ford Contour in the rain with a new moon and, with the click of a mouse, you will have the answer by return. It’s the detail that’s so impressive. More importantly it shows exactly how many claims are made by male as opposed to female drivers, and what the average value of the claims is.

All around the world, the statistical evidence shows women making fewer claims and, when they are involved in accidents, the amount claimed tends to be lower.

The reason for this is that, in general, women drive within the law. They do not try to beat the lights or drive too fast on city streets so, if there is an accident, they are traveling more slowly and the impact is less damaging both to the vehicles and the people inside. Not surprisingly, this excellent safety record has been rewarded by lower premiums. Where the risk is lower, drivers pay less. Except, in Europe, this will change next year.

The European Court for Human Rights has just ruled that men and women must pay the same premiums. At the end of 2012, there must be a new system in place to calculate premiums without relying on gender as a key factor. So what’s going on? Well, ask yourself, is it fair to charge someone more to insure their vehicle just because they are male. No one asks to be born male or female so why penalize all those who have the bad luck to be born male? Keeping this real, men don’t crash because their sexual apparatus gets caught in the steering wheel. People get into accidents because they drive badly. There’s no point in forcing people to pay more because of something they are powerless to control. There’s every reason to base auto insurance quotes on actual driving records because, if the record is bad and the premium rate is high, it gives those drivers an incentive to improve their driving. Calculating premiums should be very personal, looking at how well each individual drives. Grouping everyone together on the basis of their gender for issuing auto insurance quotes is arbitrary and unfair (at least, in Europe).

There’s much debate around the healthcare system reform proposed by President Barack Obama. And while there are many people who protest against it, and those who support it, it is important to know what it is all about in the first place. Here is a short overview of the reform, which is comprised of three essential parts:

1. Assure all American citizens with access to comprehensive and affordable health coverage

The main features of this part are:

New Public National Health Plan, which will be very close to the current health coverage provided to federal employees. The main difference is that the new plans will be available to all US citizens for a reasonable price no matter of their financial situation. Deductibles and co-payments will be reduced to minimum, while low-income persons will have the possibility to use additional subsidies.

National Health Insurance Exchange, which will allow US citizens to look for private health plans. It will set regulations on private insurance providers in order to make sure that private plans are not too different form public ones.

New business mandate requiring national enterprises to pay for the Public National Health Plan.

Individual mandate aimed specifically at children.

More support provided to existing programs like Medicaid and SCHIP.

2. Improve the quality of healthcare services and lower their costs

This initiative presumes federal financial assistance for improving the quality of the services and lowering the costs, with additional assistance to enterprises that cover high-risk employees.

To President’s belief the following actions may also contribute to lowering cost and improving services:

Special disease management programs for improving chronic care.

Improving transparency in what concerns quality and costs of healthcare offered by providers.

Lowering the rates of medical errors.

Introducing financial incentives to stimulate substantial improvements.

Providing support for researching new and alternative healthcare technologies.

Eliminating ethnic disparities in access and quality of healthcare services.

Popularizing health IT.

Stronger regulation of insurance and drug markets in order to lower medication costs and allow cheap health insurance.

Preventing Medicare private plan participants from overpaying.

3. Wellness and healthy lifestyle promotion

This initiative is to be supported through the following actions:

Special wellness programs at working places.

Eliminating child obesity with school activities.

Better education for present and future healthcare workers.

Promotion of healthy lifestyle in communities.

Saving possibilities with the new initiatives

President Obama estimates that in average a typical American family will be able to save about $2,500 on an early basis after the plan will be implemented. These are the possible sources for such savings:

Health IT introduction and implementation.

Improved quality of services.

Limitations on health insurance provider profits.

Federal funding of catastrophic coverage that will lead to cheap health insurance.

Universal coverage availability.

As you can see the Plan requires significant federal funding and that is one of the major points of those who are against it. Other arguments include direct implication to health insurance market, which of course is not quite welcome by the insurance companies. But is the idea of cheap health insurance for everyone that bad?

How can you tell that you really need home insurance? Well, if you’re not planning any illegal things like insurance scam (which is definitely not a good idea, especially these days), it will be really hard to predict any situation when you will actually need some insurance coverage for protecting your house. Until, of course something bad happens and you will need the money to pay for the damage. However, there’s a range of circumstances that make an insurance policy for your house a really welcome if not necessary addition to your paperwork portfolio.

The following are the most typical events that will make having home insurance a necessity unless you have a lot of money and can rebuild your home from scratch without worrying about finances.

Fire

Fire is definitely one of the most hazardous of perils that can happen to a house. It has the potential to completely destroy an entire building within minutes and there’s a very little chance that any of your personal belongings will survive it. Fire is very hard to control and it can happen any time, with most cases of fire being reported when the home owner is actually away. It can be a spark from a malfunctioning home appliance or a cigarette butt that lights up a pile of dry leaves that you’ve left in your front yard. And the moment you arrive home you find nothing but a pile of ashes instead of all of your belongings. A standard homeowners insurance policy provides protection against any forms of fire.

Flood

Living in an area with no large bodies of water nearby doesn’t mean that you don’t have the risk of having flood damage in your house. Things like heavy showers, bad water pipes and even a broken washing machine can flood your house and damage a large part of your belongings beyond repair and restore. Sometimes, the damage from flood can be much worse that that caused by fire. Standard homeowners insurance policies do not carry coverage against flood damage and you will have to purchase such a policy as a weaver to your current one or buy it separately.

Earthquake

Earthquakes are certainly the hardest to predict and hardest to protect against of all natural disasters. An earthquake can destroy an entire town or city within just a few minutes, turning even the most durable of constructions into a pile of dust. And the best thing you can do during an earthquake is to stay away from your house that can collapse over you. Standard insurance policies include coverage against earthquakes, too. However, in order to make sure you will also be paid for the lost belongings you should have an inventory of all the items (especially valuables and electronics) with detailed information on every piece that can further be used for reimbursing the cost of all the lost belongings.

There are other circumstances that can also be a threat to your house and you want to have coverage against them. Having tornado insurance in an area where they are common is definitely a must. However, keep in mind that no one is imposing you to have home insurance, It’s a decision choice that can save you a lot of money and time in case something bad happens to your house.

No one knows when they will need their home coverage because it’s really hard to predict anything like an earthquake, theft, flood or hurricane. And unless you plan doing some fraud with our insurance policy (which is, of course, not the smartest thing to do) you might never suspect that you really need it before something bad happens. That’s what insurance is for – it covers you against situations that are unpredictable. But what exactly are these situations that home coverage is designed for protecting against? The fact is that the list of such circumstances is very large and varies from one policy to another.

However, most insurance policies are designed to provide coverage against circumstances listed below. Each of them can’t be predicted. But sure has the potential to devastate your house and leave you without a home unless you have proper coverage.

Fire

Fire has the potential to turn your entire house into ash within minutes even before you can call for help. All that is needed is a small leak in your oven, a spark from the fridge or a forgotten candle to fire your house up, destroying all of your belongings in a very short time. Even if you’re fully confident about your appliances and devices, you aren’t fully protected from fire. A single cigarette butt thrown into your yard can be just enough to turn your precious house into a pile of burnt stacks. And taking into account that most fires happen when no one is at home and can’t control the disaster, the risk of leaving your house with respectful insurance is too high for you to assume. Most homeowners insurance policies provide coverage against fire.

Flood

Flood poses a risk to many households, even those that aren’t situated near rivers, lakes or other bodies of water. Pipe problems, heavy shower and even a malfunctioning dishwasher are also considered as flood risk, and if you feel that your home might be subject to such a situation, make sure that you have flood coverage with your home insurance. If a main water pipe gets damaged somewhere beneath or near your house and you are not at home the damage can be as bad as in the case of fire. Of course, there is a chance that you will be able to restore some of your belongings, still it can be quite costly to repair the soaked house and buy new appliances that usually tend to get ruined by water. Not all policies cover flood damage, so you have to make sure your does if you need this type of coverage. Some companies offer flood damage insurance as a separate policy.

Earthquake

Earthquakes are certainly amongst the most disastrous and haunting of natural disasters because they are impossible to predict and you know there is one when your entire house is already shaking like cardboard construction. The damage delivered by an earthquake is usually very serious, making entire towns and cities impossible to live in. Even if your house has sustained an earthquake and is still standing, the structural damage can be so serious that the house should be demolished and built anew in order to be possible to live in. Most policies include this type of damage, however make sure to get as many homeowners insurance quotes in order to get the best rates.

The world is often a confusing place and nowhere is the confusion likely to be so complete as in the tax system. Here we have the best brains in the Government taking on the best brains in the private sector. The Government wants the maximum tax take. The private sector wants to arrange things so that no one with money ever has to pay any tax. Somewhere in the middle the two world-views collide and, usually, some tax is paid. Anyway, when President Obama signed the healthcare reform bill into law, some of the largest employers in the US let out a collective sigh of pain. As an example, Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of excavators and bulldozers. The day after the President’s signature, Caterpillar announced it was taking a charge of $100 million to earnings over an expected loss of tax benefits. A number of other influential corporations have also made allowances in their accounts. The reason is that the healthcare reform ended a tax break given to cover the cost of supplying drugs to early retirees.

Let’s take this step by step. If a person continues to work, he or she will be covered under the employer’s plan. All other things being equal, working up until you are entitled to Medicare gives continuity of coverage. But there was always a problem if someone took early retirement. Health insurance companies were reluctant to insure older people who might more quickly develop serious medical problems. So, to give people aged between 55 and 64 a bridge until they became eligible for Medicare, employers were given a tax break to enable them to pay for their ex-employees’ drugs. With the disappearance of the tax break, employers were therefore left with an obligation to pay for drugs without any relief.

Acting through Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary to the Department of Health and Human Services, President Obama has announced a $5 billion package to offset the loss of the tax break. This will run from June 2010 to January 2014 when the individual health insurance plans offered through the new exchanges should come onto the market. It is estimated that about 4,500 private and public employers will be eligible to claim from this new fund. The intention is to provide continuity of coverage under the current health plans and it will be condition that the employers maintain their contributions, i.e. federal money is a top-up not a substitute for payment by employers. Ms Sebelius has also made it clear that the individual health plans offered to early retirees must include coverage for chronic and high-cost diseases and disorders. Employers cannot cherry pick the diseases to be covered. That means the victims of heart attacks or those diagnosed with diabetes and cancer will get continuing support under the plans if federal funding is to be drawn down.

In general, the business community has been slow in showing its gratitude. The feeling seems to be that Government made a mistake when pushing through the reform bill and was now offering a fraction of the total money required to fill in the hole. Nevertheless, the President has recognized the problem and made funds available to help offset it. Whether these funds will prove sufficient is something we will have to wait and see. For the retirees, it should mean access to benefits with fewer hassles.
